Fit Mom, Karlye // Pushing for Progress

Fit-Mom-MonikerHi, guys! Last week I told you about my SMART goals. On Monday I found myself in a situation that reminded me of how much I really need to push myself to make progress and meet those goals. I drove home to PA this past weekend for my mom’s 60th birthday. I had planned to go to Crossfit Saturday morning before I got on the road, but that didn’t happen. I spent the rest of the weekend eating things that I most definitely did not need to eat. Everything tasted so delicious going down, but by the time we left to head back home, I felt awful. My stomach was aching and I was so disappointed in the decisions I had made that weekend, including the decision to not wake up early enough to at least kick off my weekend with a great workout.

Before I went to bed on Sunday night, I checked my box’s blog to see what the Monday WOD would be—ball slams and BURPEES! Ugh, I wasn’t excited about the burpees, but I knew I needed to make sure my butt made it to a class the next day. Plus, I was off on Monday and, therefore, had zero excuses.

The next morning, I took Dev to school and considered going to the new 12 p.m. time slot for Monday classes. I decided to just wait until the 6:30 p.m. class I usually go to because I had a lot of errands to run and I thought Dev might have been disappointed if he didn’t get to go to the gym with me. You know, because he seems to think we go there for HIM to workout. Lol I put together a healthy snack for Dev to eat in the car to avoid any meltdowns and headed out around 5:45 to go pick him. I left with plenty of time to get to the 6:30 class, but it seemed as though the universe was against me! After getting stuck in traffic and then having to drive completely out of the way because I couldn’t make the left turn I needed to make, I knew there was no way I was going to get there in time.

Now, being on time is very important at my box. The general idea is if you can’t make it to class on time, you can wait until the next class. Unfortunately, the 6:30 class is the last WOD of the day, so I didn’t have another class I could go to that day. I was so mad at myself for not just going to an earlier class; I was off allllllll day!! I almost started to drive home, but then I decided I just needed to PUSH harder to get that workout in. I looked at the clock and figured I would only be a few minutes late. I knew that if you are bold enough to show up a few minutes late, you WILL be punished with burpees (which were already on the WOD), but I decided to at least try to get there. I ended up being about 10 minutes late and was indeed punished with 20 burpees. I think coach went easy on me because I struggle with burpees and they take me forever.

The Level 1 WOD at the end of class was a 5 minute AMRAP of 5 ball slams and 5 burpees. Before he started the clock, coach strongly suggested that we aim for getting AT LEAST one round per minute. I was tired and my body was already sore from everything else we did in class, but I was determined to get at least 5 rounds. The clock started and I finished the first round in about 30 seconds, but that pace didn’t last long. Before I knew it, it was gasping for air and my burpees got slower and slower. I think I may have just laid on the floor at some point, lol. Coach called out that there were 20 seconds left for the Level 1 group and I was halfway through my 5th round. I felt like I didn’t have much energy left, but I pushed myself as hard as I could and I busted out those last 5 burpees and completed my 5 rounds just as time ran out. I did it!!

Let me clarify that I have no plans of showing up late to class on a regular basis because that’s rude and burpees suck, but on that day, I knew showing up late and suffering the consequences was better than not showing up at all. If I didn’t go to Crossfit that day, I could have easily continued to go downhill eating crap and being lazy. Sometimes you have to push yourself a little harder to see progress. Push yourself to get in that workout after a long, exhausting day. Push yourself to get in one more round or one more rep. Push yourself to finish that meal prep. Push yourself to make healthy food choices. The more we push, the faster we’ll see progress.
